THE POPULIST
THE POPULIST

The Populist project was undertaken by Lagranja Design, a Barcelona based design office and within the scope of the project this historical premise in Bebek, which is one of the popular neighbourhoods of Istanbul, is re-interpreted and re-used with the architectural approach and technology of today. The application and construction processes of The Populist, this high-end contract in İstanbul, project, designed as a 3-floor restaurant on a total area of 1050m², were carried out by YOO Architecture.

The Creative Elements in a High-End Restaurant Design is What Makes It Unique

The beer tanks in the general concept of the project were re-designed specifically for this project. Along with the tanks, also metals and pipes that bolster the industrial concept were used in various areas in order to create a holistic effect. The tanks which were mounted on the ceiling in a way that gives the impression that tanks are extending beyond the ceiling, and the concept is supported by connecting special pipes equipped with lighting fixtures to these tanks on the ceiling. Also, pipes were equipped with an automation system that can change the lights according to different scenarios, for different events and weather conditions. These creative solutions are what makes a luxury restaurant fit out unique.

Overcoming Obstacles During a High-End Restaurant Fit Out

As these metal tanks conceived for the Dream Machine were produced much heavier than the calculated weight, first the acoustic paints were removed and MDF was attached to reinforce the ceiling. Following the reinforcement of the ceiling, the design of the remaining areas was changed and finalized. In a high-end contract it is crucial to foresee obstacles and come up with a quick and efficient solution.

The Acoustic of a Luxury Restaurant Fit Out

Acoustic values for the space were calculated rigorously both due to the location of the premise and our Angie club project which is also located in the same premise. For acoustic panels’ mockups were requested from various firms. The supply of the requested amroc panels were challenging in terms of delivery and timing. For this reason, original amroc panels were ordered in flat slab forms and holes were drilled on the panels to create the desired effect. The holes drilled on panels were made according to the lighting fixtures and relevant construction process for each panel was carried out on site.

Acoustic paint was applied on ceilings and perforated acoustic panels were installed on lower levels and on the walls. Fire retardant velvet curtains were used to support the sound control. All construction works like manufacturing of parts, supply of furniture and materials were completed expeditiously.

Finalizing A High-End Contract

While working with many different teams during this process, both local and foreign, we ensured the coordination and managed to complete the process within 6 months. The main element that shaped the general approach of the project was to create a volumetric broadness taking advantage of the gallery space at the focus point of the space and to create the sense of transparency in perception. The bespoke “Dream Machine” that catches the attention at the gallery space is composed of metal and semi permeable tanks cut in half and mounted on the ceiling. In the application process, we carried out studies with many local and foreign paint production companies for the acoustic paint to be applied on the Dream Machine. In the end, we decided to move forward with the brand that provides the desired high quality and the acoustic values we requested. The painting process was completed in 3 days by a team from abroad. Once again, finalizing a high-end contract we saw that meticulous planning, precise coordination and time-efficient hard work brings out a successful luxury restaurant fit out.
